Hope you all are having a wonderful day! We’re halfway through the workweek, which feels amazing. Getting SO close to the weekend. I’m headed home to the suburbs of the Chicagoland area for my bi-annual dentist appointment, which isn’t the most glamorous plan, but it is exciting to have the opportunity to catch up with my family. (Plus, a homemade meal from my mom – insert happy dance here!!)
Anyways, in case you didn’t know, my full-time job from 9-5 on M-F is a communications and public relations coordinator in Chicago. So my typical style is actually work wear most days of the week. I tend to air on the side of business casual, and create outfits that can translate from work to weekend without too many adjustments. The main reason for this is because I don’t want to have two completely separate wardrobes (I don’t have enough money, closet space, time, etc.)
With this in mind, I’m launching this “Work Wear Wednesday” series! I even personally find it difficult to get inspired when it comes to outfits for work. So far, I’ve already had so much fun creating these looks and thinking outside the box. My hope is that this will be helpful for all of you when identifying staple items for your wardrobe, finding ways to build an outfit, transforming your work wear to happy hour or even to the weekend, and so on. As always, I welcome your feedback and if you want to see anything specific for this series – please let me know!

To kick things off, I wanted to showcase work wear Wednesday winter layering tips.
This look features one of my favorite versatile skirts! The universal business skirt is typically a pencil skirt, and I have a few of those in my closet. But for a more casual look, I much prefer an a-line mini skirt that hits just a few inches above the knee. The best part? This wool sidewalk skirt from J.Crew Factory is on sale for under $20!!! I ended up buying it in this color as well as the black.
One of the reasons that I chose to feature a shorter skirt is also because they’re easier to layer with for the winter. (Not pictured are my black opaque tights and black leather ankle boots.) If it’s extremely cold, which in Chicago it certainly is this season, for additional winter layering you could also pair with your favorite leggings. But I can already picture wearing this with a silk camisole for spring and summer, too. It truly is just so versatile.
I’ve paired the sidewalk skirt with a J.Crew striped tissue turtleneck, which is one of my favorite tops of all time for this season. Perfect thin long sleeve top for layering and can be paired with virtually anything from skirts to high waisted jeans to oversized cardigans. Optional for this work wear outfit, pair with a blazer for any major meetings you might have on the agenda or just for the added warmth.
Lastly, I absolutely always carry a large tote bag to work. This way I can toss everything I need in one place. It typically includes my lunch, a planner or notebook, pens, my kindle for reading during the commute, way too many lippies, sunglasses, wallet and much more. With so many items, it’s rare that I switch them out but probably at least once a season for a fresh look.
